In a given year, one in five people in Canada experiences a mental health problem or illness. There are no limitations to those who may be affected. High-performance athletes in their teenage and early adult years often face significant stress and life’s challenges can seem immense. Not only are they facing the pressures of excelling and reaching the next level in their sport, but they’re also doing so during critical educational and social periods in their lives. TalkToday was designed to provide support to these young people and to destigmatize the negative connotations associated with seeking help. Talk Today is [...]

2017-04-06T13:39:15+00:00 Categories: CMHA News, Events|

On Saturday, September 24, 2016 we participated in the Niagara Wine Festival Grande Parade for the first time. The weather was perfect, the energy from our friends, family, and staff was high, and the encouragement and support we received from the community was incredible! It's okay to not be okay, and we decided to drive home that message in our inaugural float this year. All of our participants decorated a white t-shirt with two statements on the front and back. Personal insecurities, challenges, or mental health issues were displayed bravely on the front of each shirt, while the statement on [...]

It’s amazing what a community can accomplish when residents and local businesses come together. On Sunday, August 7 the Welland Chiefs Baseball Club hosted their first charity baseball game, Strike Out Stigma, to support local mental health programs and services. Thanks to the dedication of Event Chairs Jennifer Richards and Steve Maurice, the Welland Chiefs baseball team, and their cohort of volunteers, the event was a great success! Nearly 200 people attended, including 30 players between the two Niagara District Baseball Association (NDBA) teams and 20 dedicated, friendly volunteers. While they lost a close game against the St. Catharines Cobras, their fundraising efforts counted as an inspiring win for anyone impacted by mental illness in the Niagara [...]

On Sunday, February 28th, CMHA Niagara staff, clients, volunteers, and general supporters, attended the Niagara IceDogs vs. Erie Otters afternoon game.  We got everyone's attention with our photo booth and our beautiful bright green hats with our logos proudly embroidered on them!  Another highlight was CMHA Niagara's very own Gary, Intake Coordinator for St. Catharines, getting to drop the puck (pictured below).  GREAT JOB, GARY! And a big thank you to everyone who came out, checked out our table and photo booth, and cheered on the Talk Today initiative, promoting positive mental health for all!

Talk Today

2017-01-04T09:57:45+00:00 Categories: CMHA News, Events|

Canadian Mental Health Association branches across Ontario have partnered with the Ontario Hockey League to provide their teams with mental health supports and training.  This partnership came to light after one of the OHL Players for Saginaw Spirit died by suicide in 2014. The OHL recognized that these young players needed help to keep their mental health in as good a shape as their physical health. CMHA Niagara partners with both the Niagara IceDogs and the Erie Otters to provide each team's players and staff training on how to recognize the symptoms of deteriorating mental health and how to ask [...]
