World Suicide Prevention Day: September 10

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) aims to spread awareness and break the silence about suicide. The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year — that’s one person every 40 seconds. Up to 25 times as many make a suicide attempt. Suicide creates a tragic ripple effect that impacts people who have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who has made a suicide attempt. Suicides can be prevented, though. Learn more about effective suicide prevention strategies here.

On September 10, join with others around the world who are working towards the common goal of preventing suicide. Light a candle in your window, wear a yellow and orange ribbon, reach out on social media, and/or speak up to challenge the stigma associatied with suicide. Downloadable resources are available on the Suicide Prevention website.
